There will be a post of substance in the near future. It’s been a big week. Eric passed his PhD defense. It turns out I’ll be teaching the next few months instead of lounging around. But I thought I may ask a question.
I need a new source of info for recipes. My cookbooks have been used so often that I practically know them by heart. I have a few online sites I use, but I thought I’d poke around some food blogs and wanted to know if anyone has some they know or like. One of the first ones I stumbled across looked very nice but had recipes for sweet corn ice cream and apple risotto with pork tenderloin and apple salsa. We are a low-key bunch chez Severson and I’m not looking for anything that belongs on a magazine cover. I consider myself a good cook, but I’m not really up for fussy food. (I believe the technical term is “fancy-shmancy.”) Instead I’d just like something that has yummy and practical recipes so I can build my repertoire.
And on a final foody note, Eric’s family is coming to visit soon and we’re very excited. And if any of you have food requests let us know. Right now nothing’s been planned except my Upper Echelon Oatmeal Cookies. If you have other preferences, I’ll be happy to oblige.

Jess, I subscribe to a magazine called “Simple & Delicious.” It is great and I highly recommend it. We are always trying new stuff out of it and then when we find something we really like, we tear out the page and put it in a binder. Here is the website: http://www.tasteofhome.com/simple-delicious-magazine/

Everyday Food magazine works great for me…good pictures, doable recipes, no (or few) weird ingredients. I made Shepherd’s Pie this weekend and we’ll be going “back to the bowl” a few times this week. Cook once, eat twice (or thrice)!

Oh…and apparently there’s an associated website AND TV show: http://www.pbs.org/everydayfood/recipes/

Hooray for Eric! Good job.
And Jess, I hope that although you have to work for the next few months that we will still be able to consider a little get together in the near-ish future.

Mello Yello and Licorice (bits or straws) will suffice. No cooking necessary

A foodie blog I love is called Orangette (http://orangette.blogspot.com/). I think you’d like it as the author is a great writer too. She has a ton of links to other foodie blogs on her blog to that can be interesting to peruse. But, my main go-to site is Epicurious (www.epicurious.com). It’s got a lot of archived recipes from Bon Appetit and Gourmet, which I know for some people sounds “fancy-schmancy” (I thought my dad made up that word) but really they have some great simple meals too. When I decide to try something new it’s the first place I search for recipes. You can keep a recipe box and read/post comments on recipes. It’s great! I’ve subscribed to Bon Appetit since high school and I love it.. I always try a few new recipes out of the new issue each month. It’s only $12/year. My other main go-to is the Joy of Cooking. I’m eagerly waiting to check out Giada De Laurentiis’s new cookbook too as a source for some new Italian recipes.
